Eyes are the most beautiful creation of the almighty. The world couldn’t be so beautiful without the perception power of the eyes. Whether it is a picturesque landscape or an enchanting waterfall, the mind recognizes through sensory rhythm generated by our vision. It is the prime duty of the people to protect their eyes. There have been lots of discoveries and innovations till date. Spectacles were the most primary invention but with the passage of time, people started to manufacture lenses to solve the visionary problem. Contact lenses became rather a fashion statement
The history of contact lenses has undergone various ups and downs with resolutions of various models and defects. In 1508, Leonardo Da Vinci introduced the idea of contact lenses. In his book Codex of the eye, Manual D, he mentioned about the methods for altering the corneal power. He experimented by submerging the eye in a bowl of water to study the accommodation mechanism. In 1636, Rene Descartes gave an idea in which a glass tube filled with liquid was kept in direct contact of the cornea. The idea was totally impractical. Thomas Young in 1801 developed a pair of contact lenses and fixed the water-filled lenses to his eyes. His model was based on the innovative approach of Descartes. However, this model was also defective as it neutralized the refractive power of the eyes. Sir John Herschel in 1845 proposed two ideas for visual impairment. He proposed spherical capsule of glass filled with animal jelly and mold of cornea. Later, Hungarian Dr. Dallos with Istvan Komaromy in 1929 made molds from a living human eye. From that time the lens manufacturers started manufacturing lenses that can fit actual shape of the eyes
In the year 1887, F.E. Muller, a German glassmaker, designed the first eye covering that gave vision even more clarity. The first successful contact lens was produced by German ophthalmologist Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick in 1887. The fabricated focal sclera contact lens was laid on the less sensitive rim of tissue around the cornea. As the Fick’s lens was large and cumbersome and so it was really unbearable for even a couple of hours. In 1887, Louis J. Girard invented similar form of contact lens. Until 1930s, glass blown sclera lenses remained prevalent but later plastic lenses made up of polymethyl methacrylate were developed. In 1936, William Feinbloom invented the plastic lenses which were made up of a mixture of plastic and glass. In 1949, the first corneal lenses were developed that could be worn up to sixteen hours a day. With the passage of time and advent of technological innovations, the PMMA corneal lenses design became even more sophisticated. The lenses designs were opaque and did not allowed oxygen transmission. It resulted in various types of adverse clinical effects. Later, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses became much prevalent. The Czech chemists Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim brought revolution in the use of soft lenses. First soft (hydrogel) lenses were started to be used in some countries in and around 1960s. British optometrist Rishi Agarwal suggested disposable soft contact lenses in 1972. There are a number of hybrid lenses that are now available in the market. These set of lenses consists of a rigid center and a soft skirt. It rather meant that smaller, rigid lens was affixed on the surface of a large and soft lens. It gave the effect of both that is the benefit of vision correction of a rigid lens as well as the comfort level of a soft lens
Ciba Vision launched the first silicone hydrogels lenses in Mexico in the year 1998 that really revolutionized the lens manufacturering. Ciba Vision Corporation was established in 1980 as a result of diversification strategy of the Ciba-Geigy’s (USA) Pharmaceutical Division which is headquartered in Atlanta, GA, U.S. Later, Ciba–Geigy merged with Sandoz in 1996 and formed Novartis. Novartis is now the world leading supplier of health care products and Ciba vision has became its eye care unit. Ciba Vision which was like a startup company has now became a recognized brand and uses high quality standards, innovative and leading technologies to meet the global market demands
There are various categories of contact lenses that are manufactured by Ciba Vision and all of them are healthy and highly permeable for oxygen passage. Clinical problems that are associated with the cornea and conjunctiva of eye are not a problem now. Indeed, Ciba Vision contact lenses are available for both long and shortsightedness. People suffering from presbyopia and Astigmatism can find their cure with Ciba Vision contact lenses. There are various categories of contact lenses that are used in our daily life.
