Sunglasses offer visual aid, often termed as shades or goggles, feature lenses that are coloured or darkened to prevent strong Ultra violet rays reaching the eyes. These are eyewear products, designed to protect the eyes from excessive sunlight. Eyes are extremely light sensitive and can be easily damaged by overexpose to radiations in the visible and non visible spectra. Bright sunlight can merely be a distracting annoyance, but extended exposure can cause soreness, headaches, or even permanent damage to the lens, retina, and cornea. Short term effects of sun exposure include a temporary reduction in vision, known as welder’s flash or snow blindness. But the long term effects consist of cataracts and loss of night vision. In both these cases, the damage is caused by ultraviolet (UV) light, which literally burns the surface of the cornea.

Today, everyone wears sunglasses. When styles change and it’s time to update a look by investing in a new pair, most people don’t think twice. It may be interesting to learn that prehistoric humans invented the first sort of eyewear to protect the eyes from the sun’s glaring high ultraviolet rays. In the mid-18th century, James Ayscough started experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles. Ayscough believed that blue or green glass could correct specific vision impairments. Protection from sun rays was not a concern for him. Yellow/amber and brown-tinted spectacles were also a prescribed item for people with syphilis in the 1900s and earlier centuries because sensitivity to light was one of the important symptoms of the disease. In the early 19th century, the use of sunglasses started to become more widespread, especially among movie stars’.
