stylish eyeglassesGlasses, also known as eyeglasses or spectacles are alleviative lenses installed in frames. They are commonly used for vision correction as well as eye protection. The lenses are shaped in turn to bend light rays which allow the rays to focus on the retina. It acts as eye protection against visible or near visible light or radiation. It allows better vision in bright daylight and protects against damage from high levels of ultraviolet light.

Glasses have now become an accessory more than just a necessity. Whether you want to appear cosmopolitan, cheerful, carefree, youthful, moderate or stylish, the right eye wear can help you to achieve the desired look. There is a shift in the current trends such as retro, vintage-inspired frames, chunky tortoise shells and geometric shapes which attract attention.

People generally recognize you by your face therefore the glasses you choose to wear represent your whole identity and if you choose to wear only one pair of eyeglasses for everything you do, that also says something about you. From so many brands and styles present today in the market, it is very difficult for us to choose the right pair of eyeglasses.

The collection is becoming more elaborate and some of them are even considered as jewellery pieces that make a big fashion statement. The optical collection is now being treated in a more fashion oriented way.

Frame Materials:

Different eyeglass frame materials generally expand your options for a new look. While shopping for new eyeglasses, think about variety in colors, durability, lightness, favorite brands, hypoallergenic materials, uniqueness and price. In fact, finding the perfect eyeglasses with qualities that are most important to you could be as simple as choosing the right frames material, because each type has its own unique strengths. Some of them are:

If you are looking for colours of the rainbow, then Zyl is your material. It is extremely light in weight, very cost-effective and a creative option for eye wear.

Some also use cellulose acetate propionate, a nylon-based material that is hypoallergenic, light-weighted and has more transparency and gloss than other plastics. Nylon is also a prime material for sports and performance frames that are both strong and light-weighted and are very resistant to hot and cold.

Plastic made of castor oil is now used in some eyewear because of the high price of petroleum.

Plastic frames do have some drawbacks. They are easier to break and burn, and aging and exposure to sunlight decrease their strength. Colours can fade over time but not much with modern materials.

Monel, a mixture of many metals is most widely used today in the manufacturing of eyeglass frames, is malleable and corrosion resistance. But it is not 100% corrosion-resistant for with some people it can react with their skin chemistry. But it can be avoided if palladium or nickel-free coating is used.

Many frame manufacturers also offer titanium and beta-titanium styles these days. It is a silver gray metal that is light-weighted, durable, strong, hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant. It can be produced in a variety of colours for a clean, modern look with a hint of style. Some frames are also made from the combination of titanium and other metals such as nickel or copper which costs less than other titanium frames.

Beryllium, a lower cost alternative to titanium eye- wear is corrosion and tarnish resistant, making it an excellent choice for those who have high skin acidity or spend most of their time in or around salt water. It is a light-weighted steel gray metal, very strong and flexible and is available in variety of colors.

Stainless steel, an alloy of steel, chromium and many other metals are another alternative to titanium eye wear. Qualities include light weight, low toxicity, and strength and are highly resistant to corrosion, abrasion and heat. Many stainless steel frames are also nickel-free and thus hypoallergenic.

Flexon, also called a “Memory metal” is a titanium-based alloy. Even after twisting, bending and crushing, these frames come back into its original shape. Flexon frames are light-weighted, hypoallergenic and corrosion resistant.
Aluminium, a non-ferrous material, used primarily by high-end eyewear designers because of the unique look it creates is light weighted and highly corrosion-resistant. Pure aluminum is soft and weak, but commercial aluminum with small amounts of silicon and iron is hard and strong.

Nowadays, some manufacturers are also using gold and silver plating to provide a jewellery-like accent on plastic and metal frames. Semi-precious or precious stones are also used as an accent in the temples to provide a luxurious touch that can be worn in a formal office or on dressy occasions to create a flashy or retro look.

Apart from the material, the frame should also complement the shape of your face and should make a fashion statement as well. It is always said that we should choose frame that are not like the shape of our face. We should consider some points while choosing the right eyeglass frames depending on the face shapes:

  • Round faces look great with angled or square frames, which make the face look longer and slimmer.
  • Heart shaped faces that are wide in the forehead look better with frames that are wide at the bottom to add width on the bottom part of the face. Rimless or light-coloured frame can also give you the required result.
  • Triangular faces have narrow forehead and wider chin, so choose geometric frames with colour on the top half.
  • Square face looks good with round or oval frames, which will balance the angles of the face. If your lower part is heavy try something that stylizes the top line of the frame. Narrow frame styles will make a square face appear longer.
  • Rectangular faces look great with round frames, which make the face seem wider.
  • Oval faces can choose oval, round or angular types of frame.
  • Oblong faces look good with round or curved frames, which take away the from the length of the face and emphasize the width. Also, choose frames that have a low bridge, which shortens the nose.
